"Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works"
World Breastfeeding Week 2026
"Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works"
Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur, joins the global community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th August 2026. We reaffirm our commitment to promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding as the cornerstone of a healthy start to life.
This year's theme, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works," reminds us that breastfeeding is one of the simplest, most effective, and sustainable interventions for ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and child.
Throughout the week, Tata Main Hospital has planned a series of awareness programs, educational sessions, counseling activities, and community outreach initiatives aimed at empowering new and expectant mothers with accurate information and practical support. These activities are designed not only to educate but also to address common misconceptions that often prevent mothers from embracing optimal breastfeeding practices.
One of the highlights of the inaugural celebration has been the enactment of engaging role plays and myth-buster sessions by our healthcare teams. These performances effectively challenged long-held myths surrounding breastfeeding, particularly the harmful practice of discarding colostrum, the thick yellowish first milk produced after childbirth.
Often called a baby's "first vaccine" or a "magic potion," colostrum is rich in antibodies, nutrients, and immune-boosting factors that protect newborns from infections and lay the foundation for lifelong health. Through these interactive sessions, mothers and families were encouraged to understand its immense value and ensure that every newborn receives this precious first nourishment.
Breastfeeding is much more than nutrition. It provides babies with all the essential nutrients required during the first six months of life, strengthens immunity, promotes healthy growth and brain development, and nurtures the unique emotional bond between mother and child. Equally important, breastfeeding contributes significantly to maternal health and well-being.
It is firmly believe that successful breastfeeding is a shared responsibility. While mothers are central to the breastfeeding journey, support from families, healthcare professionals, employers, and the wider community is crucial. A supportive environment enables mothers to breastfeed confidently and overcome challenges they may encounter along the way.
At Tata Main Hospital, we have specially trained nurse who provide comprehensive breastfeeding support to mothers during both the antenatal and postnatal periods. They educate and empower mothers on correct breastfeeding techniques, proper positioning and attachment and effective lactation management. The nurses also address mother’s concerns, clarify misconceptions and provide personalized guidance to help them overcome breastfeeding challenges.
On this World Breastfeeding Week, we call upon healthcare workers, families, and community members to join hands in creating a breastfeeding-friendly culture. To strengthen what works, challenge misconceptions, support every mother, and ensure that every child receives the best possible start in life.
Every mother deserves support. Every baby deserves the gift of breast milk. Together, we build a healthier future, one child at a time.
