NIT Jamshedpur Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Focus on Excellence, Sustainability and Viksit Bharat

Director Prof. Goutam Sutradhar calls for excellence in education, research, innovation and environmental responsibility

Jamshedpur, August 15: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm on Saturday. The national flag was unfurled by Prof. Goutam Sutradhar, Director, NIT Jamshedpur, in the presence of Deputy Director Prof. R. V. Sharma, Registrar Prof. S. K. Sarangi, Deans, Heads of Departments, faculty members, officers, staff, students and research scholars.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Goutam Sutradhar paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured the nation's independence. He said that Independence Day is not only an occasion to remember India's glorious freedom struggle but also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment towards nation-building.

He emphasised that, as an Institute of National Importance, NIT Jamshedpur has a significant responsibility to contribute to India's technological, economic and social development through excellence in education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

NIT Jamshedpur among India's Top 50 Green Universities

Highlighting the Institute's achievements, the Director particularly mentioned NIT Jamshedpur's recognition in the National Green University Ranking (NGUR) 2026. The Institute has been recognised among India's Top 50 Green Universities, securing 28th position nationally with a Gold Rating.

The recognition acknowledges the Institute's commitment to sustainability, climate action, environmental stewardship and responsible higher education. Prof. Sutradhar said that sustainable development and technological advancement must go hand in hand and that educational institutions have an important role in promoting environmentally responsible practices.

The achievement adds another significant dimension to NIT Jamshedpur's growing institutional profile and reflects its commitment to creating a sustainable and environmentally conscious campus.

82nd Rank in NIRF 2025 Engineering Ranking

The Director also highlighted NIT Jamshedpur's 82nd position in the NIRF 2025 Engineering Ranking, describing it as an important milestone in the Institute's continuing journey towards academic and research excellence.

He attributed the achievement to the collective efforts of the faculty, students, research scholars, officers and staff of the Institute and expressed confidence that NIT Jamshedpur would continue to improve its academic and research standing.

Focus on Emerging Technologies, Research and Innovation

Prof. Sutradhar also highlighted the Institute's initiatives in advanced technology and research. The 5G Use Case Lab, established with the support of the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, is expected to provide new opportunities for research, innovation and practical applications of next-generation communication technologies.

He said that the Institute is continuously strengthening its research ecosystem, innovation culture, entrepreneurship initiatives and industry-academia collaborations to connect academic research with real-world challenges and industrial requirements.

Expansion of Academic Programmes

The Director also referred to the launch of NIT Jamshedpur's two-year full-time residential MBA programme, marking an important expansion of the Institute's academic portfolio. The programme is aimed at developing future-ready professionals with capabilities in management, technology, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Commitment to Viksit Bharat @2047

Prof. Sutradhar called upon students and research scholars to use their knowledge, creativity and research capabilities for nation-building. Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, he said that institutions of higher learning and the country's young generation have a crucial role in transforming India into a developed and self-reliant nation.

“Every achievement of NIT Jamshedpur is a collective achievement of the entire NIT Jamshedpur family. Our goal is to build an institution where academic excellence, high-quality research, innovation, environmental responsibility and service to the nation progress together,” Prof. Sutradhar said.

He urged students to think innovatively, pursue excellence and contribute to society through their knowledge and skills. He emphasised that the true purpose of education is not only to create technically competent professionals but also responsible citizens committed to the development of the nation.

The Independence Day celebration concluded with a renewed commitment by the NIT Jamshedpur fraternity towards academic excellence, research and innovation, sustainable development and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
